I write about complex subjects in clear, accessible language and a human voice

I believe that academic work should be accessible to audiences beyond the academy, not least to research participants themselves. I have wide experience crafting research briefs, summary reports and policy documents drawn from research in the human and social sciences.

Expertise in graphic and information design allows me to combine visual and written communication where appropriate, creating infographics, and short, engaging research briefs with high visual content. I am also available to write website copy and organisational documentation such as policy and procedures and staff handbooks. Below are a few examples of recent written work:

Innovating Road Safety: Lessons for Transport Systems – A future-facing guide for people working in road safety innovation. Report for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, with Dovetail Consulting.

Speaking for Ourselves – Summary Report: Auckland City Mission Family 100 Project. Speaking for ourselves was produced primarily for Family 100 participants and other key stakeholders.

Why escaping the debt trap is so hard for poor Auckland families – Feature article for Metro magazine.

I use design to tell stories

I am an experienced graphic designer with a particular interest in information design.

My skills and experience are diverse. I have worked for some of the largest advertising agencies in New Zealand, DDB and Interbrand (previously Imagination), the pioneering Design for Health and Wellbeing Lab at Auckland Hospital, and as a freelancer for a host of small, innovative businesses and large clients such as Massey University and AT Metro. Services include branding, document design and web design in WordPress. I am also an experienced design educator, having taught art and design history and critical/contextual studies on the Degree and Postgraduate Diploma Design programmes at Auckland University of Technology.

I am a social researcher with diverse experience in the health and social sectors

I am a senior consultant with Dovetail Consulting, a research and evaluation consultancy based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland and an associate with the Centre for Social Impact.

Recent contracting assignments include researcher roles for the Tāmaki Regeneration Company. Perviously I contributed to work by the Joint Centre of Disaster Research, Wellington (GNS Science and Massey University School of Psychology), exploring household emergency preparedness and barriers to preparedness for Wellington householders, and the experiences of apartment dwellers during and following the Kaikoura earthquake. I was also Research Officer for the Auckland City Mission Family 100 Research Project, and social scientist/designer for the Design for Health and Wellbeing Lab and researcher on a Massey University project entitled Beyond the supermarket system: food security and non-commercial food systems in West Auckland.
